Side effects following first dose of COVID-19 vaccination among the health care workers of Gujarat: A Cross-sectional survey

Abstract
Introduction:
SARS-COV-2 induced Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-2019) is a current pandemic world is facing badly. To prevent infection and severe disease, there are various vaccine are developed. Most of the vaccines were given emergency use authorization, so, they can be utilized to prevent COVID-19 infection. Due to that side effects and adverse drug reactions following COVID-19 vaccination was largely unknown. In India, initially vaccine was given to health care workers who were fighting as frontline warriors. This survey was intended to know various side effects and ADRs following first dose of this initial phase of vaccination.
Methodology:
A survey of COVID-19 vaccination related side effects under "Adverse Event Following Immunization – Pharmacovigilance program of India" (AEFI-PvPI) by the Department of Pharmacology, Pramukhswami Medical College, Karamsad was conducted among the health care workers of Gujarat after the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination in February 2021. It was a google form based online survey. Data like demographic details, type and details of vaccine, details related to side effects were collected. From google form collected data was extracted in Microsoft Excel sheet for analysis.
Statistical Analysis:
Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted.
Results:
Total 772 health care workers responded. Total 493 participants (64%) experienced AEFI. Pain at injection site was most common. Other common AEFIs were fever, body ache, weakness, headache, chills, joint pain loose stools, nausea, vomiting and allergic reactions. In most participants, the onset of symptoms started within 1 to 12 hours. Most of the participants (75%) have taken meditation to relieve side effects. Paracetamol was most consumed medicine overall.
Conclusion:
After first dose of COVID vaccination, 64% health care workers experienced various side effects. Side effects were generally mild and were resolved with simple medication like NSAID. The side effects profile was comparable to side effects reported in early clinical trials.
