Abstract
Background: This study evaluates the knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate medical students towards people with disabilities (PwDs) after attending disability competency sessions as part of their MBBS foundation course.
Methodology: The exploratory mixed-method design included quantitative analysis using the Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons (ATDP) scale circulated in google form and qualitative through focus group discussions (FGDs). Data were collected from 325 students of a private medical college in Gujarat, with additional insights gathered from FGDs involving selected participants.
Results: The ATDP scores indicated a generally positive attitude among students, with no significant gender differences. Key themes emerged during FGDs, including perceptions shaped by personal and family experiences, societal inclusion, medical training, challenges in patient interaction, and systemic institutional perspectives. Students highlighted the need for enhanced practical training, awareness of government resources, and addressing biases within the healthcare system.
Conclusion: Study results align with global findings emphasizing the importance of early exposure to disability-focused education in medical curricula. This study underscores the need for continued integration of disability competency sessions as part of MBBS foundation course.

Key words: Disability competency, People with disabilities, Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons (ATDP) scale, focus group discussions
